Flagstaff Considers Endorsing Carbon Tax

By Elisha Dorfsmith

Representatives from the Citizens Climate Lobby recently gave a presentation to the Flagstaff Sustainability Commission about their local resolution supporting a National carbon tax.

The Flagstaff Sustainability Commission will be voting on this resolution at their December 28th meeting. The Flagstaff City Council will be voting on this resolution in January, 2016.

If you have an opinion on this proposed resolution, you can contact the Flagstaff Sustainability Commission at: tlawless@flagstaffaz.gov and the Flagstaff City Council at: council@flagstaffaz.gov

Below is a video of the proposed resolution presented to the Flagstaff Sustainability Commission on November 23rd.

    Hi Elisha,

    A couple of questions:

    1. What is the Flagstaff Sustainability Commission? Are they appointed or elected? Any background would be appreciated.

    2. Is it possible for you to post the text of the proposed resolution?

Thank you for keeping your constituency informed!

Hey, thanks so much for asking.

      1. The Sustainability Commission is a council appointed City Commission focusing on all things related to sustainability from local food to recycling to plastic bag bans. I have actually been on the Commission for three years and was recently elected Chair of the commission. My philosophy on the Commission has always been to educate, promote and foster responsible behavior but NEVER use force, taxes or bans.

      2. I have not been provided with the full text of the resolution yet but it essentially says that the City will endorse the National legislation that the Citizen’s Climate Lobby is pushing. Interestingly, as mentioned in the above video, the exact language of the National legislation is still secret and confidential so we’re really being asked to endorse an idea without actually being able to read the language.
