Review: Battlefield America–The War On The American People

By Elisha Dorfsmith

If his previous book A Government Of Wolves was the appetizer, John W. Whitehead’s followup book Battlefield America is the main course.  Where the former touched on how America is moving toward a police state, Whitehead’s newest shows us just how entrenched the police state is in America and tells story after story of how we are all suspects who are looked at as guilty until proven innocent.

Worse, Whitehead explains that we are being ripped off and then victimized by the same funds that are taken from us. He says that Americans are considered little more than pocketbooks to fund the police state that fights against them.

For me, this hits especially close to home when you consider a recent ordinance passed by the City of Flagstaff to crack down on unlawful assembly of 5 persons or more. A first offense (with no warning whatsoever) comes with a $250 fine. This is in addition to possible criminal penalties and applies to everyone in attendance, the owner of the property and the tenants. Raiding one gathering could easily generate $10,000 in revenue for the Flagstaff Police Department. That’s quite an incentive to wage war on Flagstaff residents and visitors.

And then there is Civil Asset Forfeiture which is mentioned several times in the book and is happening across the country. Property and money confiscated by law enforcement and not returned even though the person robbed by police is never charged with a crime.

Whitehead goes on to discuss how we live in a society where just about everything we do is criminalized. Every American breaks major laws daily without even knowing it. Even the most obedient citizens are guilty. If the government wants to go after you, they don’t have to look far to find something to charge you with. We don’t often realize this because not all laws are enforced all of the time but if they decide to, those in authority can make your life a living hell at a moment’s notice.

Battlefield America opens the window to the real world around us, a world that most Americans are completely unaware of, and shows exactly how America has become a police state. There is a war being waged, and in every war there is an enemy that must be defeated. In Battlefield America the enemy of the state is the American people. It is time for the American people to wake up and say enough is enough.
