Sylvia Allen Proposes Bill To Destroy Open Meeting Laws In Arizona

Just when you thought the Arizona Legislature could not slap the people in the face any worse than they already have, along comes LD6 Senator Sylvia Allen with a proposal to end open meeting law as we know it in Arizona.

SB1435 would change the legal definition of meeting to apply strictly to meetings where official action (a vote) is taken. Meetings where only discussion, proposals, presentations or deliberations take place would be exempt from open meeting law. It doesn’t matter if our elected officials have a quorum. You could be locked out.

This means that the Flagstaff City Council and Coconino County Board of Supervisors could conceivably make every Work Session they hold closed to the public and media and there would be nothing we could do about it. It also means that all government boards and commissions could also lock the public out.

In an age where people are pushing for more openness and transparency in government, is this is the kind of response we should get from our elected officials? What are they trying to hide?

Please contact Sylvia Allen and others in the legislature and tell them that SB1435 is unacceptable! You can contact Sylvia Allen at: sallen@azleg.gov
