SB1017 Will Require Legislators To Disclose Financial Conflict Of Interest

By Elisha Dorfsmith

A bill requiring legislators to disclose if they or their immediate family will financially benefit from a bill or resolution has been introduced by Senator Ed Ableser (D) in the Arizona Senate. SB 1017 requires that legislators not only disclose their financial conflict of interest but also have it published on the State website on their legislative page.

Failure to disclose a financial conflict of interest will result in a Class 1 misdemeanor.

It is surprising that something like this is not already a law in Arizona and even more surprising that our legislators do not have to recuse themselves when they vote on bills they will directly benefit from. I have a feeling that the people of Arizona will agree that this bill is very much needed. How the legislators feel about it, however, could be a completely different story.

Please contact your AZ legislators and tell them to support this bill. Contact info can be found here:

I think they do if THEY will make money. But if your wife, son or other family member will they do not. Karen Fann?’s (Don’t quote me on the person) family got some road sign and guard rail contracts that many said where almost funneled to them.

Yea, it is about time! It is all about the wording, not just the title of or first paragraph of the bill so lets ask our GOP reps if they support the fill and if not why not.

It is a pretty straightforward bill. Short and to the point.
