Flagstaff Sustainability Commission Moves Forward With Plastic Bag Ban

By Elisha Dorfsmith

The Flagstaff Sustainability Commission voted 5-2 last night to move forward with an ordinance banning plastic bags in the City. I was one of the two no votes. I have always felt that the purpose of the Commission is to promote and foster sustainability rather than force it. The majority of the Commission disagreed. I’ll post updates on the ordinance as it comes together in the coming months.

The plastic bag ban would have to be approved by the Flagstaff City Council before it would go into effect.

Sometimes I stand in awe of the hubris of even minor functionaries. Apparently tyranny knows no lower boundary, and the smallest thing must be mandated by “our betters” for our own good. The next thing you know they’ll be setting size limits on peoples soft drinks.
