Update: Coconino County Independents Can Request A Non-Partisan Ballot In August

Coconino County Recorder Patty Hansen was on the Joe Harting Show earlier this evening and she said that if you’re an Independent and you want to vote in the August 26 Flagstaff City Council primary (which is a non-partisan race) you can request a non-partisan ballot with only the City races on it. Last I had heard, Independents would need to request a partisan ballot from a recognized party.

This is great news for Independents and hopefully it encourages more Independents to vote on election day.

The Republican legislature passed a law a while ago that requires cities to hold their primary elections at the same time as the statewide primaries. This state law has had cities and counties scrambling to figure out ways to hold complicated elections with partisan and non-partisan races on the same ballot.

Sounds like they’re starting to work out some of the bugs.

Please keep in mind that if you’re an Independent voter and you’re on the early voter list you will NOT receive a ballot in the mail. Instead you will receive a postcard asking you if you want a ballot from a recognized party or if you want a non-partisan ballot with only the City races on it. You must respond to that postcard if you want an early ballot. Otherwise you will have to go to your polling place on election day.

In light of this new information I deleted my previous article on the topic.

Council Candidate Jeff Knorr To Speak At March FLA Meeting

Flagstaff City Council Candidate Jeff Knorr will be speaking and taking questions at the March 20th Flagstaff Liberty Alliance meeting. The meeting will be held at the Weatherford on the second floor (Mezzanine room) starting at 6:00 pm. This event is free and open to the public so spread the word and come out and see what one of our Flagstaff City Council candidates has to say.

Jeff Knorr has lived in Flagstaff for over thirty years. He is a small business owner and advocate for many charitable causes including Flagstaff Shelter Services. Knorr is an Independent who says he wants to move past partisan squabbling and focus on real solutions.

You can learn more about Jeff Knorr at the following links:

Below is an article Jeff Knorr recently published on his website:

“Finding middle ground – As an independent I have been trying to educate people throughout Flagstaff about my views and goals. I have met many wonderful people, attended some great events and have been happy to hear many different points of view.

I have been to a Republican Party meeting, a Democratic Party meeting and will be speaking Thursday at a Flagstaff Liberty Alliance meeting. Being an independent provides some challenges as I am not directly affiliated with either major party. At the Republican meeting I was introduced as a city council candidate, interviewed briefly by their videographer and encouraged to return to share my goals and platform. At the Democratic meeting I was not introduced at all. I was acknowledged only as ” an independent candidate who we will allow to stay but who will not be speaking”. There was a table set up for petition signatures and while I was allowed to have my material out a certain member of the group was “hawking “the table and telling people not to sign my petition. At one point I was even mistakenly identified as Jeff Oravits .

I would like to believe in a non partisan election anyone trying to get on the ballot would receive support and be given the chance to earn the citizens votes based on merit and not simply by party affiliation.

I have been told by some people that I can never win running as an independent. I KNOW this isn’t true , it just may be harder. The families and citizens of Flagstaff are interested in solutions not more partisan squabbling.”

Endorsement: Barry Hess For Governor Of Arizona

Today I am happy to announce that I will be voting for Barry Hess for Governor of Arizona on November 4th. If there has ever been a time for Arizonans to break free of the two party monopoly and support principle over party that time is now. Hess is the current Vice Chairman of the Arizona Libertarian Party and he has a long track record of defending liberty and promoting freedom across the state.

Recently Barry Hess helped lead a broad coalition against a bill that was passed by the Republican legislature to limit voter choice and dampen turnout among non-Republicans. The opposition was so successful that Republicans ran scared and ended up pulling the bill. Republicans will probably bring the bill back at a later date but the people of Arizona won this round and Hess deserves a lot of the credit.

All too often our ballot is filled with candidates with ulterior motives who are owned by corporate and political interests. It’s rare when a candidate steps up for the purpose of fighting for what’s right and standing up for the people. As Governor, Barry Hess will work for YOU…not the special interests.

Flagstaff Sustainability Commission Moves Forward With Plastic Bag Ban

The Flagstaff Sustainability Commission voted 5-2 last night to move forward with an ordinance banning plastic bags in the City. I was one of the two no votes. I have always felt that the purpose of the Commission is to promote and foster sustainability rather than force it. The majority of the Commission disagreed. I’ll post updates on the ordinance as it comes together in the coming months.

The plastic bag ban would have to be approved by the Flagstaff City Council before it would go into effect.

Rand Paul CPAC 2014 Speech

Rand Paul delivered one of the best speeches I’ve heard in a long time at CPAC this afternoon. If this is the Rand Paul we’re going to see heading into the 2016 presidential campaign season he’s going to be a true force for liberty. Time will tell if he stays focused on the topics that really matter but he’s certainly off to a great early start. You can find the entire speech below.

Ben Swann Talks About Corruption In The GOP And Ending Partisanship

I have talked to a lot of people over the past several weeks about my desire to register as an Independent when my Republican Precinct Committeeman term ends in November. As Many of my readers know, I ran as a PC in my precinct during Ron Paul’s 2012 presidential run in the hope that I could help bring some positive change to the party. Since being elected, I have seen nothing but dirty tricks and corruption at every level from the Coconino County GOP all the way up to the RNC.

Today I was very happy to see journalist Ben Swann release a video that expresses what I have been feeling. Please take a few minutes to watch it and let me know what you think in the comments section of my blog. Also, be sure to visit www.endpartisanship.org

With people bailing from the two major parties in record numbers, I truly believe that Independents are the future.
