NSA Nullification, Article V, And The Trans Pacific Partnership

By Elisha Dorfsmith

The last few months have been very busy and I’m sorry that I have not been able to find much time to write on my blog. I have been posting a lot of updates and action alerts on twitter though and I encourage my readers to follow me there to get the latest on important liberty issues. You can find my twitter page HERE.

I will try to post more consistent updates on the Flag Liberty Blog in the coming months to keep you all in the loop. Below are a few things that I’ve been focused on lately…

Say No To An Article V Convention

I had a great time helping out at the Liberty booth at January’s Arizona Republican state meeting. One of the big issues we focused on was the potential danger of an Article V convention. Campaign For Liberty recently sent out a letter articulating these concerns. You can find that letter HERE. C4L is also circulating a petition against Arizona’s bill for an Article V convention. You can sign that petition HERE.

Since we are starting a new legislative session, there has been some confusion with the Article V bill. It’s titled HB2305 just like last session’s voter law that was passed in part to keep Libertarian candidates off the ballot.

The word on the street is that the legislature is considering a full repeal of last year’s HB2305 bill because they don’t want voters to reject it when it goes on the ballot in November. The thought process is if they repeal it now they can bring back all or part of the bill later on.

I see this as just another underhanded trick to keep the voters out of the equation. Let’s let the voters decide in November and leave it at that.

Stop the TPP

A little snow couldn’t keep us from taking part in the International Day Of Action Against the Trans Pacific Partnership. Several downtown local businesses took extra literature to hand out to their customers. Flagstaff Liberty Alliance created a handout for those who would like to educate their friends and family about the TPP. You can find the PDF HERE.

Support NSA Nullification In Arizona

The 4th Amendment Protection Act is scheduled for a committee hearing and vote on February 3rd. Please consider contacting the committee members ASAP and urge them to vote YES on SB1156. You can find their contact information HERE. We have a great opportunity to stand up and fight for our right to privacy here in Arizona and I’d hate to see an opportunity like this missed. Our elected officials need to see that there is overwhelming support for this bill.

Folks, This Ain’t Normal

A friend recently recommended that I read Folks, This Ain’t Normal by libertarian activist and farmer Joel Salatin. Now I get to highly recommend it to you. There has been a lot of talk lately about what solutions libertarians have to offer for environmental and sustainable living issues. Salatin focuses as much energy on realistic effective solutions as he does pointing out the concerns. It’s a well rounded book that people across the political spectrum should enjoy. Read more about Joel Salatin HERE.

Flagstaff Earth Day

(LD6 State Rep. Bob Thorpe, Flagstaff Mayor Jerry Nabours, and Flagstaff City Councilman Jeff Oravits take time out for a picture with Cindy Dorfsmith, President of Flagstaff Liberty Alliance at last year’s Earth Day event.)

On Tuesday, February 4th I will be meeting with City of Flasgstaff staff to start planning this year’s Earth Day event. Flagstaff Liberty Alliance will once again have a booth at this event and they will be handing out hundreds and hundreds of free books about gardening and urban farming.

While the food freedom resolution that we fought so hard for only received the support of three council members, we have seen some very encouraging progress in changes to the Animal Keeping part of the City Code and there are proposals at the state level that could give you more freedom to raise food for your family. The food freedom movement is gaining momentum and we expect to win some big local battles in the near future. Keep up the good fight!
