Republicans Step Up Their Fight Against Libertarians And Greens

By Elisha Dorfsmith

Republican leaders across the state of Arizona are pushing back against a Referendum put forward by Libertarians, Greens and Democrats that hopes to overturn the extremely high signature count required for third party candidate ballot access.

As I have reported in the past, HB2305 was recently pushed through by the Republican controlled legislature and at the last minute they slipped in (without debate) a section that just about eradicates third party ballot access in Arizona.

Republican State Senator Michele Reagan, who is heading up the battle against third parties, stands by the Republican argument that even though Libertarians and Greens don’t have enough members to get their candidates on the ballot they can get on their knees and beg Independents for signatures and try to achieve ballot access that way.

I have destroyed this GOP rhetoric in past articles and I believe the facts and statements from Republicans to the press show the real intention here…to keep Libertarians off the ballot in the hope that Independents who may vote Libertarian will now vote Republican. Especially in close Congressional races.

Adding insult to injury, the Republicans have named their effort the “Protect Our Secret Ballot” measure. Funny thing is, this bill has no connection to secret ballots or unions or anything like that. Republicans simply realize that people will line up to support their measure because of the title. I have been involved in Republican politics long enough to recognize their dirty tricks and this is clearly one of them.

By trying to legislate the vote in their favor, corrupt Republicans have united Independents, Greens, Libertarians, Democrats, Tea Party Members and Republicans with a conscience against them. I will be standing alongside my third party friends all the way up to election day.

Any Republican candidate who will not join me in fighting this injustice will not receive my vote. In fact, I will actively campaign against them.

On a side note, thanks to the Mitch & Joe show on the Big Talker for covering this story yesterday. People contacted me after hearing the show completely shocked that Republicans were refusing to back down on the excessive signature requirements for Third Parties. Anger is building and Republicans will face a severe backlash from voters in upcoming elections.

Great news! I just picked up petitions for the referendum to repeal HB2305 (a bill that makes it nearly impossible for Libertarian and Green candidates to get on the ballot in Arizona. We will have these petitions at tonight’s (July 18th) Flagstaff Liberty Alliance meeting starting at 6:30 pm at the Weatherford (second floor). Even if you can’t stay for the meeting, please stop by and sign the petition. For those who can’t make it, I’ll be happy to arrange for you to sign it another time.
