Action Alert: Stop Drone Spying In Arizona

By Elisha Dorfsmith

Many of my readers are aware of the anti drone spying bill introduced by several Arizona State Representatives to protect your Constitutional rights. This bill HB2574 would prohibit the unlawful use of drones to gather, store or collect evidence of any type, including audio or video recordings, or both, or other information that is not specifically outlined in a search warrant.

Many of you are also aware of a very disturbing resolution (HCR2009) which embraces drones for Arizona and closes with the following dystopian vision:

“6.  That the creation of these test ranges will mark the first step in what will undoubtedly be a long‑range process, leading to a common-day occurrence in which manned and unmanned aircraft fly safely and seamlessly together in the national airspace.”

Last night, State Representative Brenda Barton posted an update on her facebook page about these bills. She said:

“HCR2009 is a resolution supporting the development of drone technology in Arizona. It has moved out of Rep Justin Pierce’s committee with a DO Pass vote.

HB2574 however is legislation to curb the potential mis-use of drones in Arizona. It has been held in Rep Pierce’s committee and not scheduled for a hearing.”

My response:

“I understand that HCR2009 is non-binding but I think it sends the wrong message. If HB2574 does not go anywhere we’re inviting drones with no protection for the people of Arizona.”

Barton replied:

“Elisha, this is where you and your grassroots activists come in to the picture: contacting Rep Pierce to hear the bill and letting him know there is support for it among voters. That’s what the public is supposed to do in the legislative dance. If Rep Pierce hears nothing from the voters about HB2574 then he may allow it to die in committee.”

Well, I know for a fact that Pierce has heard from many of us and yet he still refuses to do anything about it. But I’m willing to turn up the pressure. I encourage every Arizona Resident to contact Representative Justin Pierce and demand a hearing for HB2574.

You can contact Representative Justin Pierce here:

2-15-2013 UPDATE:

I received the following from a local liberty activist and he makes a great point:

“Committee chairs serve at the pleasure of the speaker and do as they are told. So if Justin ain’t hearing the bill, Tobin is fine with that.”

Which means we should also be contacting Speaker of the House Andy Tobin:

Thank you for the heads-up! I was just writing LD6 reps to take look at and consider introducing some of Ron Paul’s Private Option Health Care Act to implement at the state level, and saw your email.

    Off to email Pierce now.

Tyranny never sleeps! It’s one appalling violation of our rights after another from all sides, and just trying to keep up with it all is exhausting.

If anybody receives a response from Pierce please post it here.

I am a normal citizen with nothing to hide, so if these spy drones help keep me safe from people who would want to hide their actions (murderers, rapists, muggers, etc.) what’s wrong with that? Unless I am not understanding something, you would only oppose this if you had something to hide…

I sure hope you’re kidding Paul. I suppose the framers of the Constitution only included the 4th Amendment in the Bill of Rights because they had something to hide too?

what happens if the ones that operates the drones are the murderer, thieves, or ? God forbid this should happen, but if you make it easy for the transition to take place by removing the checks and balances, you could very well see these things be used against you over night through a change of personnel.

That is why our Founding Fathers put these things in place by forming the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights or checks and balances as I have refered to them!

Paul, I also hope you’re kidding but if not…

Do you think the Founders had something to hide when they wrote the Fourth Amendment?

Jesus was innocent, Gandhi was innocent. Innocence has nothing to do with it.

“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”
      –H. L. Mencken

Too bad we all get the government fascist Americans deserve.

“The areas of life that remain outside the government’s participation, taxation, subsidization, regulation, surveillance, and other intrusion or control have become so few and so trivial that they scarcely merit mention. We verge ever closer upon the condition in which everything that is not prohibited is required. Yet, the average American will declare loudly that he is a free man and that his country is the freest in the world. Thus, in a country where more and more is for the state, where virtually nothing is outside the State, and where, aside from pointless complaints, nothing against the State is permitted, Americans have become ideal fascist citizens. Like the average German during the years that Hitler ruled Germany, most Americans today, inhabiting one of the most pervasively controlled countries in the history of the world, think they are free.”
      –Robert Higgs

        Well put Nancy!

Are we sure this is going to be heard? It’s not showing up on the committee’s agenda? http://www.azleg.gov/FormatDocument.asp?inDoc=/agendas/02200114110%2Edoc%2Ehtm

    • February 16, 2013 at 1:49 pm

Hey Wes, it wouldn’t surprise me if the reps are lying about holding a hearing. We need to burn up the phone lines on Tuesday to make sure.

    • February 19, 2013 at 7:37 am

It’s on there now but it’s for “Discussion Only”
