Earth to FUSD: The Sob Story Is Getting Old

By Elisha Dorfsmith

At a time when Flagstaff’s economically challenged residents are bracing for another wave of higher property taxes, FUSD apologists are once again singing an all too familiar tune. You know how it goes by now:

FUSD needs more money, Flagstaff needs to pay teachers more,  Arizona needs to make education a priority.  Blah blah blah.

They expect us to believe that if only they had a little more money, their problems would be solved and we wouldn’t have to deal with all the mistakes and failures that somehow come from being underfunded.

In the meantime, FUSD is embarrassing themselves by making national news for sending “obesity letters” home to parents of overweight or potentially overweight kids:

Amazing how creative the FUSD is when it comes to spending our tax dollars. Too bad they couldn’t use that same creativity to find ways to live within their means.

I believe the time has come for FUSD  to stop complaining and start asking themselves what they can do with what they have. The override passed, prop 100 passed, primary property taxes were adjusted, teachers are getting bonuses from stimulus money, they were even able to over tax property owners by $1.5 million and are not being required to refund that money. Looks like FUSD avoided the doomsday, end of the world scenarios, that everybody was so worried about.

To my good friends at FUSD, please put the begging for money act aside and turn the page. Time to focus on what can be done with your current budget. I am confident that a lot more will be accomplished if you toss the sob story.

To everyone else reading this blog, please join me in keeping pressure on the FUSD.  Children, parents, teachers and taxpayers deserve better. You can find the FUSD board meeting schedule here:
